Yes, we predicted that Filipe Toledo would emerge victorious at the 2019 Oi Rio Pro. But making that claim is kinda like forecasting sun in Death Valley, so we won’t give ourselves too much credit. The credit, of course, goes to Filipe, who’s run to his second consecutive Rio Pro win was as perfect as he visualized before the event. No matter the wind. No matter the waves. Whatever the conditions threw his way, he adapted, and won.
Deep barrels at Barrinha. Big tail drifts at Itaúna. Lofty airs at both spots. And in the final against Jordy Smith, the local hero put it all together in one wave — barrel, air, tailslide — for a 9 point ride. Jordy was comboed in the first five minutes and never broke it. Bada bing, bada boom. Tudo bem, tudo bom. With the win, Filipe jumps three spots up the rankings to third on the leaderboard. The momentum is timely as he enters the next event, the Corona Open J-Bay, another location he’s won before. We’re not saying he’s going to win there, too, but...actually, yes we are. The sun shines in Death Valley and Filipe Toledo is on a roll! Congrats, FT.
