The last time this event ran was in 1997. There were no webcasts. Very little infrastructure. 44 men and no women. Legendary WSL lensman Peter “Joli” Wilson was there, and recalled dodging deadly snakes — daily — and even seeing tiger footprints in the sand at low tide. Such is the wilderness of this place, which is only a 3-hour boat ride from the relative comfort and ease of Bali. Now, after a 25-year hiatus, the WSL is going back to Grajagan (“G-Land”) to see if this thinned-out tour of 22 men and 10 women jive with this Javanese wave. With comparisons to Cloudbreak in Fiji, we’re thinking they certainly will. The 2022 Quiksilver Pro G-Land runs from May 28 to June 6. Tune in to WSL to cheer on the Monster team.
