This Way In - 2018 Billabong Pipe Masters

Dec 102018

Location, Location, Location

Hula skirts. Shave ice. Mai tais on the beach. These are three Hawaiian things that will not be on the minds of competitors at the Billabong Pipe Masters. They’ve got bigger fish to fry. Or rather, bigger waves to surf. Every year, the WSL Championship Tour culminates at Pipeline, a slab of reef just a couple hundred feet off the white sand beach, where powerful ocean swells rush to meet their end in a hollow, heaving fury. And the best surfers on the globe attempt to ride inside them. For fun. For points. For glory. Forget the Super Bowl. Keep the World Cup. When Pipe is cranking and there’s a world title on the line, there’s no better show on earth.

Monster Threats

Filipe Toledo: He’s tied for 2nd in the world and has something to prove at Pipe. His first world title could be just a few days away.

Owen Wright: He’s back surfing big Pipe for the first time since his traumatic brain injury two years ago, and by all accounts, he’s been loving it.

Conner Coffin: The Coffin family has a winter house on the North Shore, which sits on the beach at Pipeline. So, yeah, he’s familiar.

Griffin Colapinto: He’s got momentum coming off a final’s finish at Sunset Beach and last year’s Triple Crown winner loves him some Pipeline.

Frederico Morais: Freddy currently sits just within the qualification bubble. He’ll want a strong finish at Pipe if he hopes to be on tour next year.

Yago Dora: See above ^^.

What’s the title scenario?

For Filipe to win the title, Medina has to finish third or worse and he has to get first or second.

Where the women at?

They just wrapped in Maui. Tyler Wright will be back next year to fight for a world title!
