Greg Illingworth during the filming of Ramp II Ride BMX Part 5

Feb 202017

With this years Ultimate X coming in hot, we thought we'd fire over a couple of questions to long time SA BMX legend Greg Illingworth on a couple of topics which have seen this event go from SA's biggest local BMX contest to an international platform for riders from all around the globe.

I've been a bit injured lately and I just cannot wait to ride more.

You've attended almost every Ultimate X event for the past 9 years. Can you give us a little bit of history behind it?

Ultimate X started out as a pretty big deal locally, being one of the biggest events in SA. In 9 years the event has evolved and streamlined itself. As far as BMX is concerned it's now globally one of the raddest events of the year. Riders from all over the world are desperate to make It down to Cape Town for this one.

Cape Town has become a popular destination for riders this time of year, what do you think attracts them?

The Western Cape is one of the most beautiful areas in the world. When riders catch wind of the events happening in South Africa, they see it as an opportunity to see an incredible place and compete at the same time. I suppose the weather, good cost of living, good spots to ride and amazing food help attract them too.

What are you looking forward to most about this years event?

Riding! I've been a bit injured lately and I just cannot wait to ride more.

Which of your team mates are also coming over to ride this year?

Ben Wallace, Paul Ryan, Pat Casey & Tom Isted.

Where are you heading next after South Africa?

I head straight to Sydney, Australia for the first round of the Vans Bowl series.
