If you saw him on the street you’d probably label him a swimmer or something. Maybe water polo. Or volleyball! Yeah, volleyball, something where being tall and thin works in your favor. But you probably wouldn’t turn to your friend and say, “I bet that guy is one of the best surfers in the world.” But if you did your friend would be like, “Duh, that’s Owen Wright.” (Your friend knows more about surfing than you.)
Owen Wright, that tall drink of water, is running with the pack of tall dudes that are taking over the world tour. It used to be that the average guy on the tour was 5’8”, but that’s all changing. Guys like Owen and Dane Reynolds are over 6 feet, and all expected to be world champs.
Owen is bringing a fresh approach to the tour. One that gives the fans what they want to see—progressive maneuvers in critical situations. Big first turns. Sometimes, not even turns. Big first airs.
Despite his size, he is agile and light footed, with so much grace and flow it looks like he’s dancing on the water. Although it’s more break dancing than ballet.
With all the talent in the world and a classic Australian surfing family to support him, a world title might be a tall order for Owen, but he’s looking it in the eye.
Enjoy Owen with a pair of giant claws and your favorite Aussie beer.
