Monster Energy fills Budapest’s Heroes Square four nights for 2nd annual Fridge
With a massive scaffold and snow mountain acting as the focal point, the 2nd annual Budapest Monster Energy Fridge Festival rocked out to a crescendo yesterday – but not before more than 50,000 fans flocked to Hungary’s showpiece city to witness the world’s top freeski and snowboard competitions applying their craft through the flash bulb-electrified ‘glowing green’ air in Heroes Square.
A sold-out Thursday evening show set the stage for the hottest ticket in Budapest this past week/weekend. And as the bands jammed in the background and big time companies like Oakley, Burton and Atomic showed off their latest goods, the Fridge’s amplitude level was ratcheted up rider after rider, run after run, trick after trick until they finally had to crown some winners. But the real winners over the past four days were the action sports-hungry Hungarians. Fueled by Monster Energy, the Fridge has become kin to America’s Winter X Games in terms of being the winter action sports happening in Hungary.
“Everybody was just over the top stoked,” said Joe Parsons, Monster Energy’s Marketing Director, Central Eastern Europe. “Weather was perfect, much bigger crowd this year and everyone went away with the feeling that this is just flat out and amazing event for the city of Budapest.”
Benefitting most from the popularity were the snowboarders. Based on 2010’s excellent turnout (42,000), TTR rated 2011’s Monster Energy Budapest Fridge with four stars. And with a loaded snowboard gate, Monster Energy’s own Kevin Backstrom got things fired up early by winning Thursday night’s Fridge Snowboard Style contest. Pat Burgener would go on to win Friday’s snowboard Big Air contest, while Elias Ambuhl won Saturday’s ski Big Air at the Monster Energy Fridge.
Live music rang out all four days, featuring DJ sets from Chase and Status, DUB FX and Pendulum, along with top Hungarian reggae band Irie Maffia.
