FIM Speedway GP racers ready to conclude ’24 season at Torun, Poland
All the practice. All the heats. All the semis. And all the finals through ten (of 11) 2024 FIM Speedway GP championship rounds are in the books and all that’s left for Monster Energy’s speedway racers is the Sept. 28th final round, the DeWalt Speedway GP of Poland – Torun.
It’s been a peaks and valleys kind of season for Monster Energy’s SGP racers, highlighted by some incredible highs (Dan Bewley’s “King of Cardiff” sweep of the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff and SGP/Cardiff Sprint race), and the lowest of lows (3-time SGP champ Tai Woffinden’s season-ending injury elbow injury at Poland/Gorzow).
Maintaining a consistent flow throughout the SGP season for Monster Energy was Fredrik “Fast Freddie” Lindgren. The defending SGP runner-up, Lindgren, who currently sits solidly in 3rd place overall in the standings, would podium in six of the ten rounds leading up to Torun – his lone victory on the season coming at Torun’s Edward Jancarz Stadium back in June.
Lindgren’s star as the top Monster Energy SGP racer also shone brightly outside the series when he defended his 2023 Swedish National Speedway Championship with a victory at Vastervik, securing 14 points in his five heat races before winning the main event to earn his fourth Swedish National Speedway title.
For Bewley, with a top six place (currently 5th overall) in the SGP standings in hand, earning him a spot on the 2025 FIM Speedway GP tour, the Brit rolls into Torun with nothing to lose, nor gain, as the closest challenger, European champion Mikkel Michelsen (6th overall), is out with a shoulder injury he suffered at the OlyBet FIM Speedway GP of Latvia – Riga on Sept. 7.
Mathematically, Bewley could catch 4th place Martin Vaculik, who he trails by three points (114-111), but the overall SGP podium is likely not in the cards for Bewley as the consistent Lindgren has 16 points (127-111) on Bewley.
A bonus for Monster Energy racer Jack Holder (7th overall, 97 points) is that, despite his recent dip in the results department, Michelsen’s injury opens up the No. 6 overall position - and the free qualifying pass for the ’25 SGP season for Holder. The Aussie had started out this summer blazing, winning his first ever GP - the Boll FIM Speedway GP of Croatia opener at Speedway Stadium Milenium - then making the finals in two of the next four rounds (Germany & Sweden) to have him at or near the top of the SGP standings for much of the season’s first half.
After that incredible start, Holder would run into some difficulties, for reasons he told fimspeedway.com he “Can’t put a finger on,” and was only able to manage four points in the last two rounds (Latvia & Denmark). And though the chances are very slim that Holder would be knocked out of the top six as he leads the next closest racer to the top six, currently 8th place Dominik Kubera by nine points (97-88), Holder would like nothing more than to be back on the box for SGP’s final round at Torun.
Also for Monster Energy at Torun, racer Patryk Dudek returns to action as a wild card for the SGP’s final round. Earlier this season Dudek was a wild card selection for the SGP Poland-Wroclaw round and scored a respectable 12 points. Earlier this summer, at the Polish Speedway Championship, Dudek placed 2nd to Maciej Janowski, and ahead of reigning and multi-time FIM Speedway GP champion Bartosz Zmarzlik.
